CASE STUDY: EUAA Ensures Appropriate Gas Supply For Members With Large Gas Usage

Emily Wood | January 20, 2026

BACKGROUND

In 2024, an EUAA member with large gas consumption was informed that their gas distributor would be supplying a hydrogen blended gas to their premises from 2028.

While hydrogen blended gas is suitable for large industrial and residential premises who use gas to cook or boil water, it is inappropriate for most large C&I customers who require gas for its physical burning properties such as flame speed, flame temperature and/or the atmospheric conditions created (e.g. humidity).

For the member in question, the flame temperature and flame speed were critical to their manufacturing process.

EUAA ACTION

With almost all electricity and gas networks being Corporate Partners or Supporting Members of the EUAA, we are well placed to discuss issues regarding connection, supply and quality of electricity and gas with senior management of the network business’.

In raising the issue with the particular gas distribution business’ general managers, they were unaware of the specific need of the EUAA member for natural gas network.

EUAA set up a meeting between senior management of both organisations.

OUTCOME

The gas distribution network has agreed to continue to work with EUAA’s member to ensure that appropriate gas quality is maintained at their site, which may mean that hydrogen blending wither does not take place on this part of the network, or that hydrogen blending will take place sufficiently far away that hydrogen does not make it to their site.  The gas distribution business is also looking at biomethane for the local network, which poses no problem for our member.

The EUAA considers that the gas distribution business has struck a good balance between the operational requirements to decarbonise the gas network and the requirements commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers as advocated by EUAA.

This is an example of the work done by the EUAA to benefit members. To find out more about what we do, or to enquire about becoming a member, please contact kyllie.mcmullen@euaa.com.au
