AEMC Pricing Review Encourages Greater Collaboration And Fairer Pricing For All Energy Consumers

An advocate for collaborative solutions to ensure Australia has reliable, affordable and sustainable energy, the Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) broadly supports the conclusions of the Australian Energy Market Commission’s (AEMC) pricing review report, that aims to deliver a fairer, more equitable way forward and sets a balanced path towards decarbonisation of the grid for all energy users.
“As energy markets become increasingly complex and the pace of change continues to accelerate, the current market structures are not delivering fair outcomes for all energy users,” said EUAA Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Richards.
“We have an immense challenge and opportunity to build a system, pricing structures and market that delivers the best outcomes for all consumers into the future and equitable cost sharing that is fair must be part of this new plan.”
While some are reporting that the proposed changes in the AEMC report will ‘force’ retailers to work with networks, the EUAA welcomes greater collaboration across the energy ecosystem and encourages more of it.
“If we can get better at collaboration, we will deliver a better outcome for everyone as we work through this enormous transformation of our energy system. A lack of collaboration and coordination will only lead to higher prices and worse outcomes for all energy consumers,” added Mr Richards.
“Being involved in many aspects of the energy transition including a range of pricing reviews and market changes we can see the huge benefits that come to energy consumers when we collaborative, share learnings and have fair pricing structures.”
“Fairer pricing structures doesn’t just lead to better outcomes on residential bills, it also means large industrials that make building materials including bricks and steel, food manufacturers and packaging materials also have a fairer pricing structure delivering better prices for every Australian on the everyday essentials we all use each day.
“We congratulate the AEMC for initiating this pricing review and considering how we can improve our system and make it fairer for all as our generation mix changes dramatically.”
“We look forward to working with AEMC and across the energy ecosystem as these and many other changes are considered.”
The Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) is the peak body representing Australian commercial and industrial energy users. Our members are the engine room of the Australian economy, producing many of the products that households and business use every day including bricks, glass, steel, aluminium, paper, food and beverages. Combined our members employ over 1 million Australians, pay billions in energy bills every year and in many cases are exposed to the fluctuations and challenges of international trade.
