EUAA Statement on Tomago Announcement
Emily Wood | October 28, 2025
The Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) stands behind Tomago and its workers. Today’s media coverage announcing that Tomago is considering closing its doors in 2028 because it cannot contract affordable energy in a country that has abundant energy resources is an unimaginable situation.
Aluminium is an industry that has helped shape this country, its growth and prosperity. It is part of the engine room of this nation. And its steady load has supported the development of our electricity system and helped to keep our grid stable. It has also provided important support when there is not enough power – turning down its use for the benefit of everyday Australians.
“Large energy users like aluminium along with manufacturers that make food, glass and paper or building materials like bricks, steel and cement to name but a few are all critical industries in Australia that employ tens of thousands of Australians,” said Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Richards.
“While these large industrials often fall into the hard to abate category, achieving net zero targets should not be at the expense of our critical industries. We must find a way to deliver affordable, sustainable and reliable power to serve the needs of all consumers in our transition.”
EUAA member companies are making significant investments to reduce emissions by fuel switching, contracting renewable energy & batteries on and off site, increasing energy efficiency and productivity and investing in new technologies, amongst many other actions.
Tomago has been trying to source a renewable energy contract at a price that allows them to compete for some time.
“We firmly believe that heavy industries like aluminium have a critical role to play in our future security and prosperity and we hope that a pathway can be found that allows them to remain competitive and stay in Australia,” added Mr Richards.
The EUAA is a leading advocate for large commercial and industrial energy users that promotes solutions-focused collaboration to ensure Australia has reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. These core issues are relevant to all Australian energy users, big and small.
The Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) is the peak body representing Australian commercial and industrial energy users. Our members are the engine room of the Australian economy, producing many of the products that households and business use every day including bricks, glass, steel, aluminium, paper, food and beverages. Combined our members employ over 1 million Australians, pay billions in energy bills every year and in many cases are exposed to the fluctuations and challenges of international trade.
