EUAA Welcomes Pragmatic Government Action To Secure The Future Of Tomago Aluminium

The Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) welcomes today’s announcement that the Federal and NSW state government will work together to help secure the long-term future of the Tomago aluminium smelter.

“We congratulate all parties involved in this pragmatic solution that will not only secure regional jobs but also a critical part of Australia’s manufacturing base,” said EUAA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Richards.

Aluminium is a key industry that has helped shape this country, its growth and prosperity. Large industries like aluminium and other critical metals, fertiliser, steel, bricks, glass and explosives to name but a few, are a key part of the engine room of this nation. Large steady loads like Tomago helped to support the development of our electricity system and continue to play a key role in keeping our grid stable.

While full details of the solution for Tomago are yet to be seen, the government owned Snowy Hydro looks set to play a central role.

“Using Snowy Hydro as a keystone to this strategy is the right move,” said Mr Richards.

“It is a public asset and is being used for the public good to secure nationally important industries while helping to accelerate the roll out of renewable energy and green metals. We can see this creating a potential blueprint for future industry policy that ensures industries critical to Australia’s economic strength and security are able to prosper.”

Adding, “Industry needs long-term security so they can make the multi-billion-dollar, multi-decade investments to reduce emissions and increase efficiency.  It is through this that Australian industry can compete on the global stage.”

“We congratulate all parties involved and look forward to the progression of these arrangements.”

The EUAA is a leading advocate for large commercial and industrial energy users that promotes solutions-focused collaboration to ensure Australia has reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. These core issues are relevant to  all Australian energy users, big and small.

The Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) is the peak body representing Australian commercial and industrial energy users.  Our members are the engine room of the Australian economy, producing many of the products that households and business use every day including bricks, glass, steel, aluminium, paper, food and beverages. Combined our members employ over 1 million Australians, pay billions in energy bills every year and in many cases are exposed to the fluctuations and challenges of international trade.
