The Federal Government’s announcement of a Green Aluminium Production Credit provides an important tool for the industry to continue to grow whilst helping Australia to reach its emission reduction goals, said leading advocate for commercial and industrial (C&I) energy users, the Energy Users’ Association of Australia (EUAA) .

“We congratulate the Federal Government on this initiative to support the greening of metals in Australia, beginning with the Green Aluminium Production Credit,” said Chief Executive Officer of the EUAA, Mr Andrew Richards.

“There are many reasons to support the greening of metals in Australia including maintaining and growing manufacturing capability, supporting regional jobs and accelerating emissions reduction. As the largest users of electricity in the country, the Green Aluminium Production Credit will also drive additional market demand for renewable energy.”

EUAA members, such as aluminium smelters, are some of the biggest energy consumers in the country. They produce essential goods used by the community every day as well providing key materials for renewable energy generation, transmission and the transition to net zero.

Large C&I take seriously their important role in reducing emissions and are allocating significant funds into research of alternative processes and potential fuels, investing in energy efficiency and new ways of operating their facilities, as well as supporting new renewable energy projects.

“We endorse this type of direct support to help our heavy industries transition to net zero where there is a clear challenge that is difficult to overcome. Importantly this initiative will help keep our local aluminium sector globally competitive and is likely to assist in reducing the cost of the energy transition by driving additional demand for renewable energy and help make some of the key inputs into the transition competitive,” said Mr Richards.

“We look forward to working with the government on the details of the how the Green Aluminium Production Credit is implemented and hope this is the beginning of a wave of initiatives that will support other critical metals made in Australia.”

The EUAA is the peak body representing Australian industrial and commercial energy users. EUAA membership covers a broad cross section of the Australian economy including significant retail, manufacturing and materials processing industries.  Combined EUAA members employ over one million Australians, pay annual energy bills in the many billions of dollars and support the development of a lasting national energy and climate change plan that puts downward pressure on electricity and gas costs.
